What you might see at a meeting

We start the meeting with an icebreaker to help get to know each other (and remember names). Most meetings we have facilities for tea and coffee and people bring snacks.

Babies are a big part of our lives. We feed and play with our babies, there are enough hands to hold a baby if you need to go do something.

Meetings usually have a topic for discussion. A trained volunteer prepares a meeting plan, this is usually very informal and there is lots of room for bringing up other concerns.

Sometimes we have guest speakers on special topics. They are often mothers themselves and though we might try harder to start on time, the meetings are still flexible and will still have the trained volunteer ABA counsellors to help out with any breastfeeding concerns.

We often have a few older children at our meetings too. Support people are welcome too, whatever helps you come along.

We've all had days when it is such a struggle just to get out of the house. Just getting to a meeting before it finishes can be a big achievement.

So, hopefully that gives you a taste of a typical group meeting. Each meeting is different - sometimes we have a dozen mums, sometimes only two or three. We keep the meetings going as a place where people can get that face to face contact to help reassure them that they are not alone in the adventure of motherhood.

Happy Mother's Day!

Mother's Day is coming up on Sunday 13th May.  We wish all mothers out there all the best with congratulations on making it this far.

This is also the last day of the Australian Breastfeeding Association's National Raffle.  Time to finish selling tickets and return stubs and money to Sara - see bulletin for contact details.

Our group was kindly invited to have a stall at the screening of the new film The Face Of Birth at the Edge cinema, Katoomba. We sold raffle tickets for our National Raffle - remember to get your tickets before Mother's Day! We also handed out information, back issues of Essence and generally chatted with all the wonderful people supporting new mothers through birth.

The film night was a fundraiser for a new local initiative called You Ask, We Nurture (YAWN). It is an in-home volunteer scheme that uses gentle techniques to support and nurture families with sleepless babies. They work as part of Connect: Child and Family Services Inc. (scroll to the bottom to see YAWN)
